Belize advances National Strategy for Cultural and Creative sector

By Zoila Palma:  The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), through the Institute of Creative Arts (ICA), has marked a major milestone in developing Belize’s National Strategy and Roadmap for the Cultural and Creative Sector (NSAR-CCS).

The project closing ceremony was held on Friday, October 23, at the Bliss Center, bringing together representatives of UNESCO, the European Union, government agencies, cultural practitioners, and other stakeholders to review the project’s achievements and discuss the future of Belize’s creative industries.

During the ceremony, ICA Director Kim Vasquez highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening the country’s cultural and creative sector. “The development of our cultural and creative sector cannot rest on any one institution. It requires a shared understanding of the challenges and a coordinated approach to addressing them,” Vasquez said.

The initiative has involved national consultations, sector mapping, capacity-building activities, and international peer exchanges to identify opportunities, challenges, and development needs within Belize’s cultural and creative industries.

Following the ceremony, approximately 20 National Team members and representatives of the inter-agency Technical Work Group participated in a joint working session to review emerging strategic pillars and objectives.

Participants represented various fields, including film, visual arts, music, dance, design, heritage, arts education, cultural administration, and cultural organizations. Institutional representatives from NICH, the Economic Development Council, and BELTRAIDE also contributed to discussions on practical measures to strengthen the sector.

The contributions from the working session will inform the next stages of drafting and validating the national strategy, moving the process from identifying priorities toward developing actionable measures.
