Belize @45 History Tour brings dialogue on Independence to Orange Walk Town

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize @45 Magical History Tour made its way through Orange Walk Town on September 15, continuing a series of events aimed at encouraging dialogue and reflection on the country’s history.

The tour is led by the Institute for Social & Cultural Research (ISCR-NICH) in partnership with historian Dr. Assad Shoman, and focuses on Belize’s path to independence, the experiences that have shaped its national story, and ongoing conversations around decolonization.

During the day, the tour engaged students from New Hope High School, Muffles College High School, and Orange Walk Technical High School in discussions on Belize’s history, national identity, and the range of experiences that continue to shape the country. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and share their perspectives on how the past connects to present-day Belize.

That evening, the tour held a public forum at the Banquitas House of Culture, bringing together community leaders and residents of Orange Walk Town. The forum allowed attendees to discuss the country’s shared history and consider how a deeper understanding of the past could inform Belize’s future direction.

ISCR-NICH thanked the students, educators, community leaders, and residents who took part in the day’s events, noting their questions and input as central to the tour’s goals.

The Magical History Tour is made possible through the National Celebrations Commission and the National Institute of Culture and History, along with partners including the University of Belize.
