By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Team PACT on TRAK — Amado Cruz, Enrique Cruz, and Cristian Lopez — begin today’s Banana Bank–Double Head Cabbage stage at the top of the standings after winning Friday’s opening leg of the 2026 Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge in 5:06:42.70.

The trio controlled the San Ignacio–Banana Bank route on Friday setting the tone for the four‑day race, but the gaps behind them remain tight heading into a stage known for reshuffling the order. The long, technical stretch through the Belize River Valley demands endurance, clean steering, and disciplined teamwork, factors that often determine who reaches Double Head Cabbage first.

Black Orchid Resort — Carlos Linares, Brandon Lind, and Jesus Linares — finished second in 5:11:11.48, while Team Riverside Boys — Henner Cruz, Efrain Cruz, and Brian Cruz — crossed just four seconds later in 5:11:15.29, keeping them within striking distance.

Black Orchid Resort’s consistency and river experience make them one of the teams most capable of challenging the leaders over today’s winding course. For their part,
Team Riverside Boys’ familiarity with the river and their ability to surge in the middle stages could put pressure on the front of the pack.

Behind the top three, Ranza River Cruiser, C2 River Blazer Bro’s, Lucas Oil, Lucas Oil Mixed, Team Brothers, Belize Coast Guard Spartans, and Team Table Rock Jaguars
all start the day inside the top ten.

C2 River Blazer Bro’s Make History
The standout performance of the opening leg came from C2 River Blazer Bro’s, who finished fifth overall in 5:19:34.00, becoming the first two‑man team ever to break into the top ten on the opening day. Both paddlers previously raced with the Slim & Trim Like Guava Limb dynasty, adding a compelling storyline to this year’s race.

Finish‑Line Dispute Still Overshadows the Race

The event continues under the cloud of the finish‑line controversy between the Belize Canoe Association and the organizers. While paddlers have committed to following all official checkpoints to avoid disqualification, they plan to paddle on to Belcan Bridge on Monday in a symbolic protest defending the race’s traditional finish.

Day 2 Outlook

Saturday’s stage from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage is one of the most tactical of the race. With only minutes separating the top teams and river conditions favourable, another fiercely contested leg is ongoing as fans gather along the riverbanks.
