By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Love FM has announced that the next Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge will be held from March 7-10, 2025.
“Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or new to the race, this is your opportunity to push your limits, experience the beauty of Belize, and be a part of an unforgettable event,” Love FM said in announcing the 2025 edition.
“Join us on the river—let the adventure begin!”
Slim & Trim like Guava Limb, comprising Javier Guardado, Daniel Cruz, Jr., and Andres Cabb, Jr., has won the annual four-stage canoe race over the last two years.
The 175-mile race dates back to 1998. (Read Richard Harrison’s account of how the Ruta Maya race came to be by clicking here.) The race wasn’t held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stage 1 starts on the Macal River under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio and goes to Banana Bank. As soon as it leaves San Ignacio, it enters the Belize River where the Macal River joins the Mopan River. Stage 2 goes from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage. The third stage takes canoeists from Double Head Cabbage to Burrell Boom, and the final leg extends from Burrell Boom to Belize City, where it finishes by the Belcan Bridge.
The Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge features eight categories: Men, Women, Mixed, Masters, Intermural, Pleasure Craft, Family, and C2.
