By Breaking Belize News Staff: Five Belize City men accused of robbing a 23-year-old man at gunpoint on the Belchina Bridge remain behind bars after a magistrate denied their bail request and ordered them to stay on remand until January 9, 2026, when their bail applications will be considered.

The accused are:

  • Shemaud Nunez, 24, maintenance worker
  • Shemar Zuniga, 19, production assistant
  • Edward Saldano, 26, laborer
  • Rudolph Gibson, 22, sales clerk
  • Devon Garcia, 20, warehouse attendant

All five appeared in Court #3 on Monday, where they were served 48 pages of partial disclosure along with one DVD. Prosecutors informed the court that five additional DVDs are still pending.

The group, still unrepresented, pleaded for bail, with Nunez and Saldano telling the court that the alleged robbery was not committed with a gun as police claim, but with a knife. Zuniga had initially pleaded guilty to armed robbery in October, but that plea was later rejected after he insisted no firearm was used.

Despite their appeal, the magistrate explained that due to the nature of the offense, bail could not be granted at this time and may still be denied when the matter is next brought back to court. The men were advised that bail consideration is not automatic.

The accused complained about prison conditions, telling the court they have been kept in “the hole” since October, where they claim meals consist of “one slice of bread in the morning and one cup of rice in the afternoon.” They also requested permission to make phone calls to their families.

Police allege the men robbed the 23-year-old victim Aaron Whyte of a $500 cellphone at gunpoint on October 6, 2025. The group reportedly fled in a Chevy Equinox, which was later intercepted near Lindo’s Alley. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up the stolen phone.

The five were initially arraigned on October 9, 2025, and charged jointly with robbery. They will return to court on January 9, 2026, when bail will be considered.
