By Horace Palacio: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is on high alert as Tropical Storm Sara approaches Belize’s southern coast. With the storm expected to make landfall within 24 hours, BEL has initiated its emergency response protocols to ensure the safety and reliability of electricity services.
In anticipation of potential outages caused by heavy rains, strong winds, and lightning, BEL has mobilized its teams, resources, and equipment to prepare for storm impacts. The company warned that power lines may be affected by falling tree branches or lightning strikes, triggering automatic protection mechanisms that could result in intermittent outages.
BEL assured customers that repair teams will be dispatched as soon as conditions are safe and the “All Clear” is given. However, safety remains the top priority, and in some cases, power may be preemptively disconnected in hazardous areas to protect lives.
Customers are encouraged to report fallen or damaged power lines via BEL’s toll-free hotline or social media channels. BEL also advised residents to stay updated on safety guidelines through its BEL 24-7 App, social media pages, and local broadcasts.
