BEL implements COPA adjustment of 1.5 cents per kWh for August

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has announced the implementation of a Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) mechanism effective August 2026, following the Public Utilities Commission’s (PUC) final decision in the 2026/2027 Annual Review Proceeding.

Under the decision, the PUC established a Regulatory Sandbox to evaluate and apply COPA on a month-to-month basis.

For August 2026, the regulator approved an adjustment of 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which will be applied to customers’ August electricity bills.

BEL said the actual cost of power over the past six months was 4.3 cents per kWh higher than the reference cost approved by the PUC.

However, the Regulatory Sandbox limits any monthly COPA adjustment to a maximum of 1.5 cents per kWh, providing customers with protection against sudden and significant changes in electricity costs.

The company explained that future monthly adjustments could increase, decrease, result in a rebate, or remain at zero, depending on the actual cost of power and the PUC’s approval each month.

BEL will submit verified operational and financial data to the regulator for monthly review, with approved COPA adjustments appearing as a separate line item on customers’ bills.
