By Zoila Palma: A beekeeping training session was recently conducted in the Belize District as part of the national Bee Control and Management Program, led by the Belize District Agriculture Department in collaboration with the Beekeeping Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE).
The training aimed to enhance local capacity in safe and sustainable bee management while promoting environmental and agricultural resilience.
Through the program, participants—including new beekeepers and agricultural extension officers—were certified as Bee Controllers, enabling them to safely manage and relocate wild bee swarms from public or residential areas.
This certification equips them to respond quickly to bee-related incidents, reducing potential risks to communities while protecting Belize’s valuable bee populations, which play a critical role in pollination and biodiversity.
The hands-on training covered key areas such as bee behavior, hive management, safety procedures, and sustainable relocation techniques.
As the Bee Control and Management Program expands nationwide, the goal is to establish a network of trained Bee Controllers across every district.
