By Zoila Palma: Belizean teachers are being encouraged to take their careers to the international level through Participate Learning’s international teaching program, which continues to accept applications from qualified educators.
The program provides opportunities for teachers to work in public schools across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, with more than 85 Belizean educators having already participated. The organization says the experience can offer valuable opportunities for professional growth while allowing teachers to experience life and education in the United States.
Participate Learning Recruitment Manager for Latin America Ronald Ramírez said the organization understands that educators often have questions about the application process, salaries, taxes, living expenses and family arrangements.
“Many educators dream of having an international experience, but they also have questions about how the process works, what they need to prepare, and what life in the United States would be like,” Ramírez said. “Our goal is to support them from the very beginning with clear and practical information so they can evaluate this opportunity with confidence.” The application process is free, and selected teachers receive a one-way airline ticket after their visa is approved. Health insurance is also subsidized, with an estimated monthly cost of US$99.69 for the teacher.
Teachers selected for the program earn an annual gross salary comparable to that of U.S. educators, generally ranging from approximately US$42,000 to US$70,000 depending on experience, academic qualifications and the school district. Participate Learning notes that salaries are quoted before taxes and other deductions.
For example, a US$42,000 annual salary amounts to approximately US$3,500 gross per month, with an estimated take-home income of about US$2,700 after federal and state taxes and Social Security contributions, depending on the state.
Participate Learning estimates that monthly living expenses for a teacher traveling alone can include US$650 to US$1,800 for housing, US$500 to US$1,100 for vehicle ownership, US$100 to US$175 for utilities, US$75 to US$150 for phone and internet, and US$200 to US$300 for food.
The opportunity is also available to educators who wish to relocate with their families.
A spouse and children under 18 may accompany the participating teacher, while a spouse may apply for work authorization after arriving in the United States.
Participate Learning also provides support with areas such as visa guidance, housing options, transportation, arrival logistics and preparation for working in a U.S. school. Some education-related expenses paid out of pocket, including classroom materials, books, supplies, computers and software, may also qualify as tax-deductible expenses when filing an annual U.S. tax return.
To qualify, applicants must have an advanced level of English, at least two years of full-time teaching experience after obtaining their university degree, current employment, a valid driver’s license and a willingness to live and work in the United States for at least two years.
Participate Learning, which has supported educators from more than 35 countries since 1987, says its mission is to connect the world through global learning.
