By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The two top teams in the Belize District Football Association (BDFA) 2025–2026 First Division Closing Championship—Tut Bay FC and Kelly Street FC—are set to meet this weekend in a special $3,000 winner‑takes‑all showdown, adding extra intensity to an already heated championship race.
Both clubs sit tied at the top of the standings with nine points each, and both feature the league’s current leading scorers:
- Esmond “Bagga” Sanker (Tut Bay) – 4 goals
- Winfield Fisher (Kelly Street) – 4 goals
Their scoring form has fueled their teams’ perfect starts, and now the two will collide in a match that carries both championship implications and a cash prize.
How the 3K Match Will Work
While the match is part of the BDFA First Division Closing Championship, the $3,000 prize requires a winner. That means:
- If either team wins in regulation, they take the $3,000.
- If the match ends in a draw, each team will still receive one point toward the BDFA standings — as per normal league rules.
- However, because the prize must be awarded, the teams will then play extra time, and if necessary, penalty kicks to determine the 3K winner.
- Important: For BDFA standings, the match remains a draw, regardless of who wins the prize.
This unique format adds a dramatic twist: the match can end as a draw in the standings but still produce a cash‑prize winner.
Preliminary Match
Before the main event, fans will also see a BDFA First Division preliminary between Scissor Ridge and Reggae Boyz FC, adding even more action to the day’s program.
More 3K Matches Coming
According to BDFA organizers, other teams have already expressed interest in participating in future 3K matches. With that demand growing, the BDFA plans to schedule additional 3K showcase games later in the season, giving more clubs the chance to compete for cash prizes while keeping fans engaged.
With Tut Bay and Kelly Street unbeaten, tied on points, and boasting the league’s top scorers, this weekend’s clash promises to be more than just a cash‑prize contest — it’s a pivotal matchup with implications far beyond the $3,000 prize for the two strongest teams in Belize District football.
