By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize District Football Association (BDFA) 2025–2026 First Division Closing Championship will now kick off on Thursday, January 15, after Sunday’s opening triple‑header was postponed due to an inundated pitch at the Marion Jones Sports Complex. The new matchday falls on George Price Day, giving fans a holiday afternoon of football in Belize City.
Sunday’s postponement came after a sudden early‑morning downpour left the field unplayable, despite several dry days leading up to the scheduled opener. BDFA officials inspected the pitch and determined that the softened surface was unsafe for competition, forcing the cancellation of all three matches.
New George Price Day Schedule
The BDFA has confirmed that all postponed fixtures will now be played on Thursday, with the first whistle sounding at midday:
- 12:00 pm – Kelly Street Bombers vs 13 Miles Elite
- 2:00 pm – Caesar Ridge FC vs Ladyville Wolves
- 4:00 pm – Tut Bay FC vs Lake I FC
The holiday timing is expected to draw a strong crowd, as fans who were disappointed on Sunday will now have a second chance to enjoy the long‑awaited start of the Belize District Closing Championship.
Postponement reignites concerns over field conditions
Sunday’s washout once again highlighted long‑standing concerns about the condition of the Marion Jones Sports Complex. The sudden rainfall was enough to saturate the pitch, prompting renewed calls for improved drainage and maintenance.
Semi‑pro footballer and BDFA Executive Member Ian Gaynair publicly voiced his frustration, noting that frequent postponements disrupt youth, amateur, and semi‑pro competitions alike. His message quickly gained widespread support from coaches, athletes, and fans who say Belize City urgently needs a reliable football facility.
Football returns Thursday
Despite the controversy, the BDFA is moving forward with optimism as the Closing Championship finally gets underway on George Price Day. With three matches lined up and a holiday atmosphere expected, Thursday promises a full afternoon of district football at the Marion Jones Sports Complex.
