By Horace Palacio: Police have formally charged 48-year-old Joseph Cifiriano Avila, a resident of Lord’s Bank Village, following a Christmas Eve accident involving a Belize Defence Force (BDF) truck on the Southern Highway.
Authorities allege that Avila, who was driving the truck when it overturned, refused to provide a specimen after police suspected him of driving under the influence. Officers on the scene reported detecting a strong scent of alcohol on his breath. Avila has been charged with “failure to provide specimen” and “driving without due care and attention.”
The incident occurred on December 24 when the BDF truck, carrying only one passenger, flipped on the highway. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the accident has raised concerns about road safety during the holiday season.
Police continue their investigations into the matter. Avila is expected to face court proceedings in the coming weeks.
