By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Disaster was narrowly averted in northern Belize on Friday after the Belize Defence Force (BDF) successfully recovered a live, high-explosive military fragmentation grenade left in a public space.
The discovery was made on C Street in Corozal Town. According to military officials, the device was found discarded in a plastic bag resting near a tree, completely exposed to the public. The BDF bomb squad was immediately dispatched to secure and remove the weapon.
BDF Commander, Brigadier General Anthony Velasquez, confirmed that the weapon was a live, American-made M67 fragmentation grenade. He emphasized the severe danger the object posed to the local community before it was safely contained.
“The grenade was a live grenade, and it could have done a lot of damage had it been used in the way it was meant to be used,” Brigadier General Velasquez stated.
No one was found in possession of the explosive at the scene, and how the military asset ended up on a municipal street corner remains a mystery. When asked about its origin, Velasquez noted that while it is an American-made weapon, security forces suspect it was brought into the country by transnational drug networks or gangs.
“The assumption would be by cartels or by criminal elements, definitely local criminal elements as well,” Velasquez told reporters.
An official investigation is underway to determine how the grenade was smuggled into Belize.
