By Hugh O’Brien: Breaking Belize News (BBN) in partnership with StemU Foundation Foundation honors Casiana Lind Sagastume as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) model in Belize for World Food Day 2025.
Casiana is currently living her dream, teaching Belizean Studies and hopes to teach Biology as well at Mopan Technical High School since August 2024.
In January of this year, Mopan Technical High School was the only school in Belize that secured a top place and won second place in the highly competitive CARICOM Youth in Agriculture High School Video Competition. One of the main persons behind this initiative at Mopan was Casiana.
Twenty-eight-year-old Casiana studied at Santa Elena Primary School, then at St. Ignatius High School in Santa Elena (now a StemU Foundation partner) where she graduated as the Valedictorian. After secondary school, Casiana went on to major in Biology at Sacred Heart Junior College in San Ignacio and then she transferred to Galen University where she switched from Biology to a major in Secondary Education with a minor in Belizean Studies and Social Studies.
In 2021, Casiana was awarded the Dame Minita Gordon scholarship at Galen University and back then in an exclusive interview with BBN’s Ruben Morales Iglesias, she said “I love me being versatile and I think that through studying I did find out that I wanted to be an educator. I would like to be at the secondary level, whether it’s in the field meaning actually teaching or eventually helping in an administrative role at a secondary school probably somewhere here in Cayo, give back to the community in terms of Santa Elena. Definitely it is a change but it is where my heart is leading me right now,”.
Casiana is indeed a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) model in Belize.
