Now featured on the BBC’s Outlook documentary titled “Excavating Belize’s Cave of Human Sacrifice”, Awe recounts how he entered Actun Tunichil Muknal—ATM for short—and uncovered the spiritual and societal unraveling of the ancient Maya.
The cave revealed chilling clues: ritual altars, pottery, grinding stones, and skeletal remains—20 in total, including a near-perfect full skeleton dubbed the “Crystal Maiden.” The discovery was more than scientific—it was emotional. Awe recalls standing silently before the remains, aware he was witnessing the final moments of people offered to Maya deities in times of dire need.
The BBC feature outlines how these findings support a theory: that the Maya civilization, once dominant and thriving, collapsed in part due to extreme droughts. With food shortages and social chaos, Maya communities turned to their most sacred spaces—caves believed to be portals to the underworld—in hopes of divine intervention.
“These sacrifices were acts of desperation,” Awe told Outlook. “The Maya were doing everything they could to survive.”
Today, Awe is not only an academic but a cultural ambassador, determined to keep Maya history alive. Through education and conservation, he brings Belizeans—and the world—into conversation with the past. His story is a reminder that sometimes, answers to ancient mysteries lie deep within the earth… and the courage of those willing to seek them.
