By Aaron Humes: Police Constable Barrington Gilbert Mai, better known as “Barry Flowers,” has been officially removed from interdiction and placed on suspension with full pay. This change comes as allegations against him regarding the abduction of Joseph (Ryan) Budna continue to be investigated.

Mai was initially placed on interdiction on September 8. The directive, issued from the Office of the Commissioner of Police, noted that he was “hereby interdicted from active duty pending inquiry into the allegation that you assisted in the abduction of Joseph (Ryan) Budna.” During this period, he was set to receive only half of his monthly salary, with limitations on his allowances.

However, a subsequent letter dated October 3, overturned the initial ruling. The “Letter of Suspension” from the Commissioner of Police authorized a reevaluation of Mai’s status; he would now be suspended from active duty while still receiving his full salary. It clarified that the previous half-salary arrangement would be rectified, and any withheld earnings during the period of interdiction would be reimbursed.

The new directive specifies that the suspension is in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Police Act, effectively replacing the earlier interdiction issued under Section 27(1). This means that despite the serious allegations pending against him, Mai is now receiving full compensation, raising eyebrows about the implications of such a decision.

Critics have expressed concerns about the police department’s handling of the case. Questions have been raised regarding the rationale behind protecting an officer facing criminal allegations, especially in a climate where public trust in law enforcement is paramount.

As the internal investigation continues, Barrington Gilbert Mai remains off-duty but will receive all of his salary and benefits from the Belize Police Department.

The Government has delegated to the Attorney General the process of forming an independent investigation into the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna in Orange Walk Town in August, as legal proceedings in both countries are underway.
