By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): If someone calls claiming to be from your bank and asks for your PIN, password or one time code, hang up.
That is the message from the Belize Bankers Association, which is warning customers that scammers are becoming more sophisticated in their efforts to steal banking information.
Association President Dyon Elliott said banks are investing heavily in cybersecurity to protect their systems. As a result, fraudsters are turning to social engineering, tricking customers into handing over access to their own accounts.
“No bank is gonna call you and ask for your one time password or your PIN, your token. No bank will do that,” Elliott said.
He explained that these scams usually follow the same pattern: build trust, create fear and add urgency.
Scammers may pose as bank staff, use real bank logos and even quote personal details to seem legitimate. Then they claim the customer’s account is in danger and push for immediate action.
“They inject a crisis or an emergency. If you don’t do this now, you’re gonna lose this, you’re gonna lose that. Your account is gonna be shut down so you need to act quickly,” Elliott said.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call or message should end the conversation and contact their bank directly using official phone numbers or channels.
