Banana boom and Lobster exports drives primary sector growth

By Zoila Palma: Belize’s primary sector experienced notable expansion in the fourth quarter of 2025, with total output valued at an estimated $180.3 million, up 8.0 percent from $167.0 million recorded in the same period of 2024, according to data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The increase was driven by higher production across key agricultural and marine commodities.

Banana output surged by 19.8 percent, rising from 19,000 metric tons to 22,800 metric tons, while yields of yellow corn and red kidney beans also improved during the quarter.

The fishing industry contributed significantly to this growth, with overall expansion of 8.0 percent. This included a 6.6 percent increase in shrimp exports and an 8.3 percent rise in exports of other marine products, primarily lobster tails and lobster meat.
