By Zoila Palma: Four-year-old Raquel Kaitlyn Quiñones has been diagnosed with bilateral profound hearing loss, following specialist evaluations conducted in Mérida, Yucatán.
Medical tests confirmed that Raquel has no auditory response in either ear, indicating a severe level of hearing impairment that will require long-term medical and therapeutic intervention.
Specialists have recommended continued rehabilitation and further evaluations to determine her suitability for a cochlear implant, which could significantly improve her ability to perceive sound.
Genetic testing suggests the hearing loss may be hereditary, doctor documents confirmed.
Raquel’s family is now seeking financial assistance to continue her treatment abroad, as access to specialised pediatric audiology and speech therapy services in Belize remains limited.
