Authorities plan prosecutions in relation to fake birth certificates

Posted: Wednesday, September 25, 2024. 5:28 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Office of the Attorney General reports that a criminal investigation is underway into the production and discovery of purported birth certificates.

A statement today announced that “The Belize Police Department has been conducting investigations at the request of the Vital Statistics Unit (VSU), the Ministry of Immigration and the Social Security Board,” and that “Persons are being interviewed, statements have been given, and charges are forthcoming.”

According to KREM Radio News, the fraud was uncovered when two American nationals managed to obtain Social Security cards and passports within 24 hours of obtaining the fraudulent certificates, after a third was caught red-handed also attempting to do so.

The statement relays that none of the documents were issued or printed by the Vital Statistics Unit as confirmed by its internal Information Technology Department but does not confirm whether those being spoken to include members of that Unit or indeed whether the Unit is at all involved, except to say that the documents were “scrubbed” or vetted.

Further security measures have since been implemented at the VSU, Ministry of Immigration and Social Security Board, about which the Ministry declines to give details. However, it assures that these measures are enough to prevent further mischief.

“Belizeans are urged not to engage in the dealing or procuring of fraudulent documents as it is only a matter of time before these acts are uncovered and prosecuted,” the statement concludes.
