By Horace Palacio: Police in Chetumal arrested a Canadian man on Sunday following a dramatic water chase in Chetumal Bay. The man, whose identity has not been released, is accused of stealing a local fisherman’s boat in an apparent attempt to cross into Belize.
Authorities report that the man allegedly took the boat from a fisherman’s pier within Chetumal Bay with the intention of heading toward Belizean waters. Upon learning of the theft, authorities alerted the Mexican Navy, which pursued the stolen vessel in open water.
During the pursuit, the Canadian man abandoned the boat and jumped into the sea, but Navy personnel quickly apprehended him and handed him over to municipal police onshore. He has since been detained in a Chetumal jail.
While details surrounding the incident remain unclear, questions have arisen about why the man was attempting to flee toward Belize. His motives, as well as any potential connections to Belize, remain under investigation.
Belizean authorities have not commented on the matter.
