By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 37-year-old caregiver is out on bail after being accused of assaulting her niece with pepper spray and damaging household items during a family dispute.
Vanessa Pitts of Freedom Street, Belize City, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, where she was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault and damage to property.
The allegations stem from incidents on September 19 and 20, 2025. Pitts is accused of damaging her niece’s 32-inch TCL television and a mirror valued at $480 in total, and of later spraying her with a substance believed to be pepper spray during an altercation.
Pitts initially pleaded guilty but later claimed she acted in self-defense after being pushed. Magistrate Mannon Dennison rejected her plea and entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.
She was granted bail of $1,500 plus one surety under strict conditions, including that she must stay 50 feet away from Nunez and avoid any contact with her or other witnesses.
Pitts is due back in court on November 11, 2025.
