By Horace Palacio:
Let me start with a definition at the kitchen table, because the phrase gets thrown around loosely.
A currency is anything scarce that people will trade value to obtain. Gold worked. Paper works. But there is an older currency than both, and in 2026 it has become the scarcest on earth.
Your attention.
An economist named Herbert Simon saw it coming back in 1971, before the internet existed. A wealth of information, he warned, creates a poverty of attention. Fifty years later his prophecy runs the world economy. Information became infinite. Human attention stayed fixed at roughly sixteen waking hours. And whenever something becomes both scarce and desired, markets do what markets do. They price it, trade it, and fight wars over it.
Want proof that attention is literally money? Look at the richest corporations in human history. They manufacture nothing you can hold. They sell one product, harvested human attention, packaged and auctioned to advertisers for hundreds of billions of dollars every single year. The head of Netflix once said the quiet part aloud, that his company’s biggest competitor is not another channel. It is sleep. When billion-dollar corporations openly bid against your sleep, the debate is over. Attention is currency, and yours is on the trading floor.
Now, the exchange rate, because this is where awareness begins.
Every free app on your phone is a till. Nothing on that screen is free. You pay in the new currency, and the platform converts your payment to the old one. This column gave you the receipts months ago. Three billion humans feeding one company’s apps daily. Seventy percent of YouTube watched by recommendation, not by choice. The angry reaction once weighted five times a like, because rage grips the eye longest, and a gripped eye is premium inventory. When content makes you furious, understand what is happening commercially. You are not having an opinion. You are being farmed at peak rates.
Surveys put the average person near seven hours of screen time daily. Do the Belizean arithmetic. Seven hours a day is over 2,500 hours a year, more than a full-time job, donated free, to the richest companies alive, by the same Belizean who says he has no time and no capital. My friend, you had capital. You spent it on the feed.
And notice the beautiful, brutal fairness of this currency, because here is the insight I want to hand this country. Attention is the only egalitarian mint on earth. Money is issued unequally, land unequally, connections unequally. But every morning, the minister and the market vendor, the millionaire and the minimum wage worker, each receives exactly twenty four fresh hours, not one second more or less. It is the single wealth distributed equally at birth. Which means the platforms’ harvest is a regressive tax, the man with the least money pays the same hours as the man with the most, and can least afford the loss. And it means Belize, which this column has shown runs a ten-to-one deficit in goods, runs an even worse deficit in attention, millions of Belizean hours exported daily to foreign platforms, zero royalties paid, the profits offshore. We are a net exporter of the new currency and we ship it free.
But now the turn, because this currency has a side the old ones never had, and it is the reason every young Belizean should sit up.
For the first time in history, a Belizean bedroom can mint it.
Under the old currencies, geography was destiny. Capital lived in London and New York, and Dangriga need not apply. But attention flows through a phone, and analysts now size the global creator economy in the hundreds of billions and climbing. A kid in Punta Gorda can hold ten thousand eyes tonight. Distance died. The mint moved into your pocket.
And look at what Belize holds to trade. Culture the world cannot copy, the drumming, the Kriol wit, the food. Nature the world queues to see, the reef, the ruins, the jungle, every viral video of which is free national marketing worth more than advertising budgets. Stories nobody else can tell. Attention, once earned, converts into every other currency. Audience becomes customers, the Marie Sharp playbook run digitally. Audience becomes tourism. Audience becomes a career that never asked anyone’s permission or work permit.
Two disciplines govern the earning, and this column taught both. First, own what you build. Reach rented from an algorithm can be confiscated by one update, so use the platforms to fish, but bank the catch in what you own, your list, your community, your walled garden. Second, mind your ratio. Create more than you consume, because the ratio between the two decides, every single day, which side of the till you stand on.
For everyone else, the citizens not chasing audiences, the awareness rules are simple and free. Audit every scroll with one question, is this paying me or am I paying it. Never spend your prime hours, the fresh morning mind, on the feed, spend them on your own work and give the platforms the leftovers. Guard your children’s attention like you guard their friendships, because that is precisely what is being purchased. And when the rage rises in your chest mid-scroll, close the app, you were just presented with the bill.
One national note, because the irony is too rich to skip. The young Belizeans actually earning this new currency for Belize are the very ones the proposed broadcasting law would wrap in licences, while the foreign platforms harvesting millions of Belizean hours pay this country nothing. I wrote it before and it stands. Tax the harvesters. Free the growers. And teach attention literacy in our schools beside reading, because a child who cannot see the till cannot guard his pockets.
Your grandfather’s wealth was measured in acres. Yours is measured in hours of focus, and unlike his land, yours is reissued every sunrise.
So here is the whole column in one breath, Belize. Attention is the new currency. The machines were built to take it. The tools now exist to mint it. And for once in economic history, every single Belizean wakes up rich.
The only question, the one that decides your year and your children’s future, is the oldest question money ever asked.
Who spends yours, you, or somebody else?
