By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Two of Belize’s most popular attractions are closed to visitors today, as the Institute of Archaeology announced that the Nohoch Che’en and ATM Archaeological Reserves remain shut due to elevated water levels.
The public notice, issued at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, comes after heavy rains from a tropical wave soaked the country over the weekend, swelling rivers and waterways across the interior.
Both sites depend heavily on water conditions. Nohoch Che’en, in the Caves Branch area, is the home of Belize’s famous cave tubing experience, while the Actun Tunichil Muknal reserve, best known as the ATM Cave, requires visitors to swim and wade through river passages. Elevated water levels make both unsafe for visitation, and closures of this kind are a standard safety measure after heavy rainfall.
The Institute of Archaeology says it will continue to monitor conditions and issue further updates, with the next expected at 6:30 a.m.
Visitors with tours booked for today are advised to contact their tour operators about rescheduling, and operators should stand by for the Institute’s next advisory before making any plans for the sites.
This is a developing situation, and we will share updates on the reserves’ status as they are issued.
