By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) were outmatched on Saturday morning in Atlanta, falling 5–1 to Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United 2 in an international friendly at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta, Georgia.
The home side dominated from the opening whistle, racing to a 3–0 lead by halftime. Despite a second-half goal from Belize, Atlanta United’s reserve squad maintained control throughout, adding two more goals to seal the 5–1 victory.
The BMNT defense struggled to contain Atlanta’s pace and precision in the attacking third. The match exposed gaps in Belize’s defensive structure, as the squad failed to mount sustained pressure or recover possession effectively.
The fixture, sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board, was intended as a developmental opportunity for the national team. However, the result highlighted the disparity in match sharpness and professional experience between the sides.
Head Coach Carlos Slusher and Assistant Coach Shane Orio led the technical staff.
The match coincided with a Premier League of Belize (PLB) break due to the FIFA calendar. Domestic league action resumes on Saturday, September 13, with Belmopan FC hosting Port Layola at Isidoro Beaton Stadium.
While the BMNT currently have no scheduled international tournaments, the Atlanta outing—despite the heavy defeat—offered a sobering benchmark as the team continues preparations for future regional competitions.
