By Breaking Belize News Staff: Arthur Hill, also known as “Turo,” has been convicted of murdering 20-year-old Levan Aldana, his brother-in-law, who was stabbed three times in Biscayne Village on January 31, 2024.
Justice Candace Nanton delivered the guilty verdict in the High Court on Thursday, finding that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Hill’s sentencing has been deferred until September 18, 2026.
The prosecution’s case relied heavily on Aldana’s dying declaration. Police officers testified that the severely injured man identified his attacker, saying, “Da Arthur Hill do it” and “Da Bra Lee Arthur Hill do it.”
Aldana suffered two stab wounds to the neck and a fatal wound to the abdomen, which caused his intestines to protrude. A doctor testified that Aldana died from the abdominal wound after suffering extensive internal bleeding.
The court also considered circumstantial evidence showing that Hill and Aldana were seen together shortly before the stabbing. A neighbour testified that Hill later arrived at his home shirtless, barefoot and sweating before asking to use a telephone and requesting a change of clothing.
Hill later surrendered to police wearing a red shirt given to him by the neighbour. An officer also reported seeing what appeared to be blood on Hill’s elbow, although no DNA evidence was presented to establish whose blood it was.
Justice Nanton found that the dying declaration, witness testimony and other circumstantial evidence, when considered together, established Hill’s guilt. She also concluded that the location and force of the stab wounds demonstrated an intention to kill.
Hill maintained his innocence throughout the trial. His attorney, Norman Rodriguez, argued that the prosecution had failed to prove that Hill was the attacker.
The prosecution was led by Senior Crown Counsel Robert Lord, assisted by Crown Counsel Joseph Perez. The judge has ordered psychiatric, social inquiry, antecedent and victim-impact reports ahead of sentencing.
