By Horace Palacio: An apparent arson attack in the early hours of Sunday morning caused extensive damage to three vehicles on Princess Margaret Drive, with losses estimated at nearly half a million Belize dollars.

Police responded to reports of a vehicle fire at approximately 5:05 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found three vehicles engulfed in flames: a 2022 Cadillac Escalade valued at $250,000 and a 2023 Audi Q7 valued at $150,000, both owned by 75-year-old Bob Hotchandani, and a brown Chevy Silverado valued at $85,000, owned by 43-year-old Sunjay Hotchandani. The Silverado was completely destroyed.

According to initial investigations, Bob Hotchandani had just returned to his residence on Barrack Road at around 4:55 a.m. and parked his Cadillac Escalade when three unidentified men reportedly arrived by boat. The suspects ran to the parked vehicles, poured a flammable substance on them, and set them ablaze before fleeing in the direction of Golden Bay.

The Belize Fire Service extinguished the flames before the fire could spread to nearby structures. Investigators recovered a container with suspected accelerant remains as evidence from the scene. Authorities are working to determine the identities of the suspects and the motive behind the attack.

Both Bob and Sunjay Hotchandani, naturalized Belizean citizens, face significant losses. The Cadillac Escalade is covered by comprehensive insurance, but the Silverado carried third-party coverage.

Police urge anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue. Updates will be provided as more details emerge.
