By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man for multiple counts of unlawful sexual intercourse involving a minor.
According to reports from the Belize Police Department, the incident came to light when a mother brought her 13-year-old daughter to the Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) Precinct #2 on April 6. The mother reported that her daughter had been a victim of sexual abuse during the months of August and September 2025 by Ashmar Rodriguez, an unemployed warehouse attendant residing at Rosalind Bradley Street, Belize City, on three separate occasions.
Rodriguez, who was unrepresented in court, appeared before a Senior Magistrate where he was informed that the charges for which he is accused are indictable matters for a trial at the High Court.
The Senior Magistrate further explained to Rodriguez that today however, she will only read him the charge and that she will not take a plea. She told him that the charge of unlawful sexual intercourse is an offense for the High Court and so she was only to make sure he understood the charges read to him.
Allegations being made against Rodriguez is that sometimes in the month of August 2025 and twice in the month of September 2025 when the minor was at the age of 12 years 5 months and 12 years 6 months, he had sexual intercourse with her.
Due to the nature of the offense, bail was denied to Rodriguez and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 4.
