By Aaron Humes: Three fatal road traffic accidents were reported over the holiday weekend, all in the Cayo District.

Early on Sunday on the Hummingbird Highway near the entrance to Belmopan, a Nissan pickup truck and a Ford F-150 pickup were seen extensively damaged. Inside the Nissan were Elifar Vasquez and Moises Perez of Franks Eddy, Cayo District, while the F-150 truck was being driven by Omar Cawich. They had collided and Perez suffered fatal injuries.

As a result, Omar Cawich has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care and attention after appearing in court today, Tuesday.

Earlier on Saturday in the Cotton Tree area, there was a collision between a Lincoln Navigator vehicle and a Ford Ranger Pickup. A woman, Ana Rivero, was killed while three others including both drivers are hospitalized in stable condition. Police continue their investigations into this accident.

And, on Sunday night in the village of Cristo Rey in the west, 40-year-old Elvis Tzib, who was headed home to Santa Elena Town for family dinner from his job at the Lodge at Chaa Creek, died when lost control of the motorcycle he was driving, in an area that had a speed bump recently removed due to road renovations.

According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, meetings are scheduled this week to advance plans to appeal for legislative amendments that will pave the way for the use of speed guns and breathalyzers by highway patrol: “I am going to propose to them for us to be able to do a joint Cabinet Paper, to amend the law as it relates to the use of speed guns. I think the way how the law is currently structured, it calls for one specific type of speed gun which is no longer in commission. So, it needs to be changed to include other types of speed guns. We want to amend the law for the greater use of breathalyzers so that the printed receipts from the breathalyzer equipment can be accepted in court as prima facie evidence against persons charged with the offense of being under the influence while driving.”

Patrols remain in place in coordination with the Department of Transport.
