Armed men carjack sales supervisor near Mile 16; police recover stolen car and suspects’ SUV

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating an armed robbery near Mile 16 on the Philip Goldson Highway in which three armed men allegedly intercepted a motorist and stole his vehicle, cash, cellphone and personal documents.

Police say a 26-year-old sales supervisor was driving his grey Honda City toward Belize City at around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday when he heard what sounded like a gunshot behind him.

A red SUV then reportedly overtook and intercepted his vehicle.

The man told police that three men wearing dark clothing, hats and partially covering their faces exited the SUV carrying what appeared to be long-barrelled firearms.

The men allegedly ordered him out of his car before two of them entered the Honda and drove away toward Belize City.

He said approximately $400 in cash, his Apple cellphone and personal documents were inside the vehicle.

Investigators later recovered a .223 round along the highway.

Police say intelligence and cellphone tracking subsequently led officers to the Maxboro community, where a red Chevrolet Equinox believed to have been used in the robbery was discovered abandoned in a ditch.

Officers later recovered the man’s stolen Honda along a trail. Police said its trunk was open and the interior appeared to have been searched or tampered with.

Both vehicles were taken to the Precinct Three Police Station for forensic processing, where investigators lifted several fingerprints.

No arrests were reported in the situation report and the investigation continues.
