For the many Belizeans backing the Albiceleste, it was a nerve-shredding ride with the happiest of endings.
For long stretches, it looked like an upset was on the cards. Egypt stunned the champions by taking the lead in the 15th minute, silencing Argentina’s supporters. Worse was to come for the favourites when Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute, moving 2-0 ahead and leaving Argentina staring down the barrel of a shock elimination.
But champions are made of stern stuff, and Argentina refused to go quietly. The fightback began in the 79th minute, when they pulled a goal back to spark belief. Just four minutes later, in the 83rd minute, they struck again to level the score at 2-2 and turn the momentum firmly in their favour.
Then came the moment of pure ecstasy. Right on the 90-minute mark, Argentina completed the turnaround, scoring the decisive third goal to break Egyptian hearts and seal a dramatic 3-2 victory. From the brink of defeat, the champions had snatched a famous win.
The dominant display in numbers showed Argentina controlling the game with the majority of possession and firing in the lion’s share of the shots, but Egypt, led by their talisman, made them work until the very last second.
For Belizean fans, who have adopted Argentina and their legendary star Lionel Messi as their own, it was an unforgettable rollercoaster. The scare only made the celebrations sweeter, and the Albiceleste march on to the quarter-finals with the dream still very much alive.
