By Breaking Belize News Staff: Approximately 60 individuals have been identified through police intelligence and investigations for possible detention under the newly declared State of Public Emergency, Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado has revealed.

Speaking during Sunday’s emergency police briefing, Rosado said officers had prepared approximately 60 files on individuals being considered under the emergency measures.

However, he clarified that not all those individuals had been detained at the time of the briefing.

The Commissioner emphasized that detention decisions are being guided by investigative leads and intelligence gathered through proactive policing.

The state of emergency, which took effect on November 1 under Statutory Instrument No. 130 of 2026, covers designated sections of Belize City, Ladyville, Cotton Tree and Unitedville.

Rosado defended the use of extraordinary security measures, arguing that police were confronting an increasingly coordinated wave of retaliatory gang violence.

He explained that ordinary policing operations had become insufficient to contain the escalating conflicts.

The Commissioner maintained that the objective is to disrupt criminal networks, prevent further murders and allow investigators to pursue outstanding cases.

Police did not provide a definitive total of individuals already detained under the new emergency measures.
