By Breaking Belize News Staff: Anthony Carballo Jr., also known as “Lee Pena,” has been sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for the double murder of Deon Faber and Allen Martinez on San Pedro. He must serve a minimum of 31 years before being eligible for parole. His sentence was backdated to August 25, 2025 — the date he was found guilty — and includes credit for time spent on remand.
Carballo Jr., 32, a father of two, was convicted for the brutal execution-style killings that occurred inside Faber’s home on the island. His cousin and co-accused, 31-year-old Darrell Grant, was acquitted of the murders after the prosecution’s case failed to establish his involvement beyond a reasonable doubt.
Before delivering the sentence, Justice Candace Nanton heard mitigation pleas from four character witnesses who described Carballo Jr. as a friendly, community-minded young man known for his leadership in sports and his willingness to help others.
Among them were Kevavanni Milligan, his stepsister, who described him as outgoing and compassionate; Keisha Nicole Milligan, who said he was a “community helper” always ready to lend a hand; Bruce Harvey, a carpenter who spoke of Carballo’s mentorship of youth in basketball; and Francisco Martinez, a former government driver who called him hardworking and respectful.
Defense attorney Abibi Moguel, representing Lynden Flowers & Associates, urged the court to consider Carballo Jr.’s good character, family ties, and rehabilitation efforts while on remand. She noted that he had completed the Remand Rehabilitation Center (RRC) program and served as a facilitator for the “New Directions” initiative for inmates struggling with addiction.
Justice Nanton began with a 35-year benchmark but deducted four years — two for rehabilitation efforts and another two for time spent on remand — resulting in a final minimum term of 31 years before parole eligibility. The two life sentences will run concurrently since both murders arose from the same incident.
Carballo Jr. was deemed a first-time offender for murder, as his prior record for handling stolen goods was not considered a similar offense. Justice Nanton acknowledged his signs of rehabilitation but emphasized the gravity of taking two lives.
Carballo Jr. will remain incarcerated until at least 2056 before he can apply for parole.
