By Breaking Belize News Staff: One cousin was convicted and another acquitted on Friday in connection with a 2019 double murder in San Pedro, following a ruling at the High Court in Belize City.
Justice Candace Nanton found 31-year-old Anthony Carballo Jr. guilty of the murders of Deon Faber and Allen Martinez, but acquitted his cousin, Darrell Grant, citing insufficient evidence to prove his involvement beyond a reasonable doubt.
Faber and Martinez, childhood friends from Belize City, were gunned down inside Faber’s San Pedro home on March 21, 2019. The crown’s case, led by Crown Counsel Robert Lord, relied heavily on circumstantial evidence, including over 40 videos and the recorded testimony of Faber’s late wife, who had described the shooter but died during the pandemic.
While both men were seen entering and fleeing the crime scene, Justice Nanton ruled that the evidence showed only one clear shooter—Carballo Jr.—and was not persuaded that the crown had proven a joint enterprise.
Carballo Jr. has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing, scheduled for October 6, 2025. The court has ordered multiple reports, including a psychiatric evaluation and victim impact statements, before sentencing.
Grant, who maintained he was only at the house to buy marijuana, walked free.
This conviction adds to Carballo Jr.’s troubled history, as he previously walked free from a 2012 Belize City murder case due to lack of evidence.
