By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): For the second time in just over a week, a motorcycle patrol along the Philip Goldson Highway at San Jose Village has produced a drug possession charge from the same telltale move, a small foil dropped at the sight of approaching police.
According to the Belize Police Department, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at about 10:50 p.m., officers conducting preventative motorcycle patrol within San Jose Village observed a man sitting near a store along the highway, in an area well lit by the shop’s light. An officer observed the man holding a shiny object in his left hand, which he dropped.
The officer dismounted, approached the man, and informed him that a search would be conducted. Checks in the immediate area where the object fell produced a small piece of aluminium foil containing a small piece of white chalky substance suspected to be crack cocaine, which was unwrapped and opened in the man’s presence.
He was informed of the offence of possession of controlled drugs, cautioned, detained, and escorted to the Orange Walk Police Station.
There, he was identified through his social security card as Luis Zair Juarez, a 24-year-old labourer of Douglas Village. He was informed of his rights through a suspect’s rights in custody acknowledgement form, which he refused to sign, with the record confirming his rights were read to him in a language he understood. The suspected crack cocaine was weighed in his presence, shown to be 0.06 grams, and sealed in a labelled envelope, which Juarez also declined to sign.
That same day, police formally arrested and charged Juarez with possession of drugs. Cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.
