By Aaron Humes: Government House is hosting the 127th Official Ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of St George’s Caye, which ended on this day in 1798.
Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller, substituting for boss Bernard Wagner, reminded that those who fought that day could not see the future, facing odds it seemed they could not overcome, but they won.
“Resilience and victory are in our DNA…Belizeans remain warriors,” said the Deputy Mayor, acknowledging that the battlefield has moved to new areas such as climate change, cybersecurity and drugs. But we are warriors of creativity and hope, people who find our way where there seems to be none.
“We are a people who adapt…when we stand together, no challenge is too great,” he continued, adding that we are defined not by our battles but by our rise thereafter.
