By Zoila Palma: Animal welfare groups across Belize are strongly condemning recent acts of violence against pets, including incidents involving the Police Department, utility workers, and general animal cruelty.
“On March 2, officers (in Benque Viejo) entered a yard and in the process, shot and killed the family dog. There is no evidence of any aggression beyond the officers’ statements and the dog appears to have been shot in the back. This incident is part of a disturbing trend of extreme violence against pet dogs by the Police Department, resulting in several deaths over the past year.
Another recent incident involved the pet of the Governor General, further highlighting the severity of the issue. Animal Welfare Groups are outraged by these senseless acts and demand immediate action.
There is yet another incident of a Belize Water Services Limited employee in the Orange Walk district who entered a yard unannounced. The employee kicked the dog on its head, severely injuring him. Previous to this, another BWS employee sprayed pepper spray at a family pet,” the groups said.
Additionally, reports of horses being abused—ridden on hot concrete, beaten, and left without proper care—have raised further concerns.
Animal welfare groups are calling on Police Commissioner Chester Williams to investigate these incidents thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable.
They are also urging both the Police Department and Belize Water Services to take responsibility and implement measures to prevent such cruelty in the future.
With animal cruelty on the rise in Belize, these groups are calling for stricter punishments and greater protection for all animals.
