Andy Palacio’s 65th birthday marked with memorial Mass

By Aaron Humes: Today, Tuesday, December 2, family and friends of the late Andy Vivian Palacio gather to mark his 65th birthday. A memorial mass will be held this evening at St. Martin De Porres Roman Catholic Church in Belize City, hosted by the Belize City branch of the National Garifuna Council (NGC), to honor the life and legacy of this celebrated musician and cultural ambassador.

Born in Barranco, Toledo District, Palacio was exposed to music from a young age and went on to make it a full-time career. He worked with pioneers like Pen Cayetano and Egbert ‘Mime’ Martinez, producing a series of hit albums and briefly hosting a television program on Channel 5, Great Belize Television (now Greater Belize Media). His last album, “Wátina,” propelled him to international superstardom while showcasing the talents of other prominent Garifuna artists.

Palacio’s contributions to music and cultural preservation have left a lasting impact on Belize and beyond. He was a passionate advocate for the Garifuna people and their culture, and his music continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans. As a UNESCO Artist for Peace and WOMEX Award winner, Palacio’s legacy extends far beyond his music, cementing his place as a cultural icon and ambassador for Belizean identity.
