By Breaking Belize News Staff: After spending an overnight behind bars over unpaid tax debts, 31-year-old Andrew Munnings walked free today — but his battle with the Belize Tax Services (BTS) is far from over.
Munnings owes the Government of Belize more than $150,000 in back taxes. His release came after his mother made a $2,000 payment this afternoon, allowing him to return to an earlier arrangement to pay $2,000 monthly — $1,000 each toward Business Sales Tax and General Sales Tax. His next payment is due October 16.
The matter grew tense in court when Munnings’ attorney, Orson “OJ” Elrington, accused the BTS of being “highly unprofessional, immoral and disrespectful” after the department shifted its demands, at one point insisting on 25 percent of half the total owed. Following a heated exchange and a brief recess, BTS agreed to accept the original payment plan.
Senior Magistrate of Court #2 emphasized that the court had already shown leniency on three occasions, despite objections from BTS. She reminded that failure to keep up with payments could land Munnings back in prison — six weeks for any default.
Speaking outside court, a visibly relieved Munnings said, “I have not taken a bath from yesterday. All I want to do is take a bath and hold my daughter.”
For now, Munnings is free — but the debt still looms large.
