By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old mother is now serving more than two years behind bars after being convicted of firearm and ammunition offenses dating back to 2020.
Ana Rosenda Herrera was sentenced late last week to two years, three months, and 14 days in prison after Senior Magistrate ordered that her two sentences—for kept unlicensed firearm and kept unlicensed ammunition—run concurrently.
The case stems from a police operation on March 18, 2020, when officers stopped a Shaw’s Bus traveling from Belmopan to Belize City. Acting on information, Special Patrol Unit officers searched Herrera’s yellow purse, where they discovered a 9mm Daewoo pistol loaded with 16 live rounds hidden inside a child’s “Dry Kids” pampers and wrapped in clear tape.
At the time, Herrera, then 25, had no gun license and was immediately detained. The firearm and ammunition were taken as evidence, and she was later charged. Following a lengthy trial, she was found guilty earlier this year, but sentencing had been deferred until last week.
With the sentences to run concurrently, Herrera will serve just over two years in prison.
