By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Roman Catholic Church has a new leader. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born cleric who has spent much of his career in Peru and Italy, has been elected as the 267th pope of the Church. He will take the name Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment as the first American to ascend to the papacy.
A Historic Election
The papal conclave, which began on May 7, saw 133 electors—the largest number of voting cardinals in history—gather in the Sistine Chapel to choose the successor to Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. After several rounds of voting, white smoke billowed from the chapel’s chimney on May 8, signaling that a decision had been reached.
Thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, erupting in cheers as the announcement was made. The new pope will soon appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he will be formally introduced to the world.
Who Is Pope Leo XIV?
Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955, Robert Francis Prevost has had a distinguished career in the Church. He previously served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and was later appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops by Pope Francis. His extensive experience in Latin America and his leadership within the Vatican made him a strong candidate for the papacy.
Prevost’s election is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Church, particularly in addressing global challenges such as social justice, interfaith dialogue, and the role of the Church in modern society.
What Happens Next?
Following tradition, Pope Leo XIV was led to the “Room of Tears,” where he donned the white papal vestments for the first time. He then returned to the Sistine Chapel for a brief ceremony before greeting the cardinals who elected him.
Pope Leo XIV the made his first public address, as Catholics around the world look to their new leader for guidance and inspiration.
