By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Pan-American national working as a manager for Amazon in Texas has been charged with assaulting two American tourists during a heated altercation at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 13, and involved 52-year-old Almangar Rueben Flores, who was on vacation in Belize with his girlfriend.
The altercation took place in a shuttle van outside the hotel on the Philip Goldson Highway, where Flores allegedly pushed 38-year-old American retiree Bailey Sprout and her 15-year-old daughter. According to Sprout, the confrontation began when the two parties were entering the van at the same time, leading to a verbal exchange that quickly escalated into violence.
Flores was arraigned on Wednesday morning in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on two counts of common assault. Initially, Flores expressed confusion about the charges, but after an explanation from the magistrate, he admitted to the assault, although he claimed that Sprout and her daughter had approached him aggressively first.
Despite Flores’ guilty plea, the magistrate initially hesitated to accept it, considering Flores’ defense and his imminent departure from the country, which raised concerns about him being a flight risk. After a brief adjournment, the court reconvened, and the magistrate ultimately accepted Flores’ guilty plea under Section 59-B, imposing no penalty.
Flores was allowed to leave the courtroom without any fines or further legal consequences and is scheduled to return to Texas on a flight tomorrow morning. As he exited the courthouse, Flores appeared in good spirits, waving to cameras alongside his girlfriend.
