Almost 10,000 deaths from COVID-19 in December, WHO data shows

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that almost 10,000 people died from COVID-19 in December across approximately 50 countries – mostly Europe and the Americas.

In addition, the WHO noted that hospital admissions jumped 42%.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus indicated that the spread could be attributed to holiday gatherings.

“Although COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the virus is still circulating and killing,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“Data from various sources indicate increasing transmission during December fueled by gatherings over the holiday period, and by the JN.1 variant, which is now the most commonly reported variant globally,” he added.

According to USA Today, the WHO chief said that there was a 42% increase in hospitalizations and a 62% increase in ICU admissions compared to November. 

The WHO chief said that this level of deaths is not acceptable especially with the availability of vaccines.

 “Although 10,000 deaths a month is far less than the peak of the pandemic, this level of preventable deaths is not acceptable,” Tedros said.
