Alliance for Democracy holds convention in Belize City

By Aaron Humes: The national convention called by the Alliance for Democracy is underway in Belize City at the Civic Center.

Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton, who is expected to be named interim leader, says she is grateful that thousands came out in support of her leadership.

“This movement is following the Constitution of the Party in its entirety,” claims Taegar-Panton, adding that she feels the delegates are in support of the Alliance’s call for a leadership change within the UDP, although Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow insists that she and other senior members have been expelled and are no longer UDP members, and hence according to the current UDP executive, today’s event holds no legal validity as a UDP convention.

She further decried as “shameful” a reportedly leaked audio of Barrow supposedly trying to convince a village chairman not to attend, saying she never felt that the AFD would not get support at today’s convention.

The AFD executive which purports to replace the UDP executive includes Hugo Patt as first Deputy Leader, Beverly Williams as second Deputy Leader, and a new chairman and vice-chairman. At least one former area representative in Port Loyola’s Anthony “Boots” Martinez is present, and the Alliance claims that 18 standard bearers countrywide are in attendance, as well as former CEO in the office of the Prime Minister Audrey Wallace. There is no indication or confirmation that Hugo Patt attended today’s events.

For his part, Barrow insists that today’s convention will change nothing in the UDP as it does not recognize those members, but they have elected not to take the matter of alleged misuse of the Party’s name to the courts.

According to Jorge Aldana, the motion to remove Barrow as UDP Leader was moved by two members of the Mesopotamia Division and 368 delegates voted and accepted the motion, confirming Taegar-Panton as interim leader.
