By Breaking Belize News Staff: The criminal case against 27-year-old Kareem Anderson remains stalled as the court continues to await a psychiatric evaluation that has not yet been provided.
Anderson, who has been on remand at the Belize Central Prison since December 2025, was brought back before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this week, where the Chief Magistrate indicated that the matter cannot proceed without an evaluation of his mental state.
Anderson’s sister appeared in court and told the Chief Magistrate that she would have to consult with an aunt to determine whether the family can assist in getting Anderson a private psychiatric evaluation. The court was informed that such an evaluation could cost as much as $2,000.
The issue has been complicated by the fact that, according to the court, the prison is presently unable to provide the evaluation due to the absence of a government-employed psychiatrist to conduct such assessments.
Anderson was first arraigned on Monday, December 29, 2025, after he was accused of assaulting two women in separate incidents in Belize City. However, the charges have reportedly still not been formally read to him because questions were raised about his mental state from the time he first appeared in court.
The first alleged victim was 39-year-old sanitation worker Kendra Hamilton, who was reportedly attacked from behind while cleaning the streets. Surveillance footage showed a man punching her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground before she managed to get back up.
The second alleged victim was identified as 69-year-old Barbara Austin. In that incident, footage showed a woman walking on the sidewalk when a man approached from the opposite direction and punched her in the face, causing her to fall hard to the pavement and appear unconscious for a short time.
Anderson was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison. His case was adjourned to July 28, 2026. Anderson is one of dozens of inmates with mental conditions who remain on remand with their cases idling due to a notable absence of any Government psychiatrist to conduct court-appointed mental evaluations.
