By Breaking Belize News Staff: An alleged mentally ill homeless man was brought before the court on Monday to answer a single charge of damage to property after he was accused of hitting a woman’s parked vehicle with a Yeti cup, shattering the windshield.
The accused, Raheem Underwood, claimed in court to be 25 years old, though he provided a date of birth placing him at 33. Underwood, who told the court he lives on South Street in Belize City, is charged with causing $760 in damages to a grey 2008 Saturn Vue.
When arraigned before the Senior Magistrate in Court #2, Underwood initially pleaded guilty. However, after the facts were read out, he changed his position, telling the court, “No, I didn’t stone the vehicle. I don’t know how the vehicle got stone.” Because of the inconsistency, the Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.
With no objection from the prosecution, Underwood was offered bail of $800 plus one surety of the same amount. His bail conditions prohibit him from contacting the complainant or coming within 100 yards of her. His next court date is set for January 12, 2026, when disclosure is also expected. Underwood, however, was unable to meet bail and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
According to police, the vehicle’s owner reported that around 10:30 a.m., she parked her 2008 Saturn SUV on West Collet Canal before traveling to Belmopan. When she returned around 3:30 p.m., she discovered her windshield had been smashed.
She told police that inquiries at the scene revealed that a “mental patient” had been seen punching her vehicle and then throwing a Yeti cup at it. Later that afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., a man approached her and reportedly said, “Ah di sprang head weh damage your vehicle.”
When the alleged perpetrator heard his name being called out, he reportedly ran. Police chased him through the George Street area and eventually detained Underwood, leading to the charge being brought against him.
Underwood remains free on bail while the case proceeds.
