By Zoila Palma: Today, Allan Pollard conceded defeat in the People’s United Party’s (PUP) Belize City mayoral race, thanking the 341 delegates who supported his candidacy and saying the experience was among the most difficult campaigns he has faced.
Pollard said, “Firstly, I would like to thank the 341 delegates who, despite all the odds, believed in my leadership and came out to vote for me.”
He also thanked those who supported him throughout the campaign, saying, “That love kept me going when things became increasingly difficult by the day.”
Pollard said he faced significant challenges during the campaign, alleging that he was “defamed, degraded and attacked in ways that only God knows how I managed to endure.”
Despite those challenges, he said he was encouraged by ordinary Belizeans who stood behind his campaign, noting, “ordinary people stood up for me.”
He added, “Some made personal sacrifices because they believed in me and believed in what we were trying to accomplish.”
Pollard said he believes he made difficult decisions based on what he considered best for the country and would make those choices again.
“I believe I have contributed greatly to the success of this Party over the years. But I also knew that some of the decisions I made recently would come with repercussions.
The good thing is that I can sit here today and live with myself, knowing that when the difficult decisions came, I did what I believed was best for the people of this country,” Pollard said.
He thanked the PUP for the opportunity to serve and called for reflection within the party, delivering a pointed message: “To the party, I say: message received.”
Pollard ended by thanking his family, friends and campaign team and said that, for now, his family, business and the remainder of his term will be his primary focus, while “the development of my country will always remain my greatest purpose.”
