Aïssata Seck was named the new director of the Fondation pour la mémoire de l’esclavage (FME) [Foundation for the Memory of Slavery], after years of notable service by Dominique Taffin (Guadeloupe). Seck begins her duties today, December 1, 2023. Seck is currently responsible for the Citizenship, Youth and Territories program [Citoyenneté, jeunesse et territoires], which she designed and deployed within the FME. Here is her letter, posted in the Foundation’s newsletter.

Dear readers of the Foundation Letter

I am very proud to have been appointed, as of today, director of the Fondation pour la mémoire de l’esclavage, with the unanimous agreement of our board of directors.

I joined the FME project in 2018 with the desire to combine my personal and professional commitments. The construction of this new institution, original in terms of its purpose, its programs, its multiple partners and its team, was a unique collective adventure.

Innovating with Dominique Taffin as director has been enriching. We have all learned from her historical knowledge, her practice in museums and archives, and her rigor in treating the subjects of slavery and its legacies. She took up the challenge of creating a renowned national institution. I thank her warmly.

The foundation, after 4 years of existence, is now in a new period, in an era that has evolved in these subjects. It must participate in recognizing the history and memory of slavery, in the fight against racism and discrimination, and in transmitting everything that overseas brings to our country.

This is the challenge that I invite you to take on with us!
