By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s agriculture sector has recorded significant growth, expanding its contribution to the national economy over the past 5 years.

Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson highlighted the sector’s performance during his 2026–2027 budget presentation today.

“Since the PUP took office in 2020, the contribution of agriculture to the economy of Belize has expanded from $560.8 million in 2020 to $889.7 million in 2025,” Ferguson stated. “This is a whopping $328.9 million dollar increase in just 5 years.”

He noted that growth continued in 2025 despite challenges affecting key industries.

“In 2025 alone Madam Speaker, the agriculture sector grew by 5.7%,” Ferguson said, adding that the increase came “despite the fact that the Fusarium outbreak in the north caused us to have a not so favourable sugar crop.”

Minister Ferguson says that government policy has driven the expansion.

“Guided by the policy initiatives outlined in PlanBelize, Madam Speaker, food production and processing have expanded,” he said, while adding, “we continue to look for new crops to produce and export.”
