By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries (MAFS-NGI), in collaboration with the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), has confirmed the presence of Anaplasmosis, commonly known as Tick Fever, in cattle in the El Pilar area of the Cayo District.

Officials say the findings point to a localized outbreak of the tick-borne disease and are urging farmers to take immediate preventive action.

According to the ministry, officers responded on several occasions to reports of abnormal cattle health and mortalities in the El Pilar area.

Farm investigations conducted on January 12, 2026, found clinical signs consistent with anemia, raising suspicions of a tick-borne illness. Blood samples were collected and later confirmed positive for Anaplasmosis.

Further testing on February 4, 2026, from another registered cattle farmer in the same area also returned positive results for the disease.

The Ministry of Agriculture and BAHA are strongly advising cattle farmers in the Cayo District and nearby areas to immediately implement comprehensive tick management programs, consult Extension Officers or BAHA veterinarians for approved treatments, and closely monitor herds for signs such as anemia, weakness, weight loss and reduced productivity.

Farmers observing unusual illness or deaths in cattle are encouraged to contact MAFS-NGI or BAHA offices for assistance.
